About Yoga
There are many different kinds of yoga. Yet, all types of yoga seek to achieve the same final goal: enlightenment. Hatha yoga, however, approaches this goal through the body (primarily) rather than through the mind or through the emotions. Hatha yoga practitioners believe that unless the body is properly purified and prepared, the higher stages of concentration and meditation are impossible to achieve.
Hatha yoga teaches us about the relationship between our bodies and our minds. Too often, we forget, ignore or even abuse our bodies for the sake of what our minds tell us we must do. Then, over time, we overlook the abuse we have done to our bodies and merely accept as ‘normal’ the sorry state that our body is in. Worse still, we are resigned to the fact that “there is nothing we can do about it”.
Bikram yoga is a revolution against this victim-thinking. For the ninety minutes of a Bikram yoga class, we return attention to our bodies and the present moment. Our bodies teach us lessons that can be carried over to all areas of our life. They remind us, for example, that small, targeted efforts made consistently over a long period of time can bring greater results than big changes all at once. It is not about executing the postures “perfectly.” But rather, that we try them “correctly” to the instructions given by the teacher to the best of our ability on that day.
Your experience of yoga will depend upon your state of mind, your body type, disposition and how many times per week you practice. Students often note improvements in their posture, muscle tone, flexibility, circulation and skin tone. Some students are able to lose weight by combining yoga with dietary changes. More common than weight loss, however, is the replacement of fat with muscle, which means that weight measurement on a scale does not change but the appearance and feeling of fitness is gained.
We invite you in to class no matter what your physical condition, level of expertise, or age is. All we ask is that you allow your mind to observe as your body moves. Have no expectations, have fun, and bring your positive attitude. Watch as your body and your lifestyle improve right before your eyes.
