Yoga Class Etiquette
Bikram Yoga is practiced in a heated room so prepare to sweat. Below are some tips and pointers to help you and your fellow students experience the yoga in the best possible manner:
Before Class
- Wear comfortable clothing that will allow freedom of movement and sweating.
- First timers arrive at least 15 minutes prior to class
- Please take your shoes off upon entering the room
- Place your personal belongings in the storage area provided
- Bring a yoga mat, large beach towel, and plenty of water for class. We have all of these for rent or sale at the studio as well
- Drink plenty of water before class. The key is to hydrate BEFORE coming to class. This will also allow your body to tolerate the heat better
- Come on an empty stomach. Eating less than 2 – 3 hours before class may make you nauseous during class. If you must eat have a banana or an apple 2 hours before class
- Bring your smile and your open mind
During Class
- The first water break is about 25 minutes into the class. This is so the body has a chance to warm up before taking in water. After that it is customary to only drink between postures.
- Listen carefully to the instructions from the teacher and don’t try to make your own modifications. The instructor will tell you what is best for your body. If you are not sure see an instructor before or after class.
- Keep movement other than the posture itself to a minimum. Excess movement can disrupt the other students’ concentration.
- If you have an emergency that requires you to leave the room please do so. However exit and return in between the postures and not while students are holding a posture for the above reason.
- Bikram Yoga Class is a 90 minute open eyed meditation that is done without music and talking, other than the instructor. If you have questions please feel free to see an instructor after class is over.
After Class
- Please exit the yoga room quietly in observance of others that are still in Savasana, and after the instructor has ended the class.
- Drink plenty of water to replace the water that was secreted during sweating.
- It is common to feel very energetic after class. It is also common to feel very tired after class. As your body adapts to the practice you will start to feel more energetic during the day with normal sleep patterns at night.
- Come back the next day! It is recommended that you come as many times in the first 60 days that you can so that your body starts to remember the postures and that you get acclimated to the heat faster.
- Tell all of your friends and family members how great you felt!
"Look into the eyes of your reflection in the mirror, and see your teacher looking back at you."
